Ft Soledad. Spanish era fort. Guard house over-looks the village of Umatac, in southern Guam. Spanish Galleons anchorage. At the end of the short lane is Umatac's third, and most famous Fort de Nuestra Seora de la Soledad. At the tip of the headland, called Chalan Aniti, on the southern headland of Umatac Bay, are the remains of the original construction, which began as early as 1803 and may have been completed by 1819 when the fort was "observed from the anchorage" to stand "out from the surrounding terrain because of its white color." At that time the fort was listed as possibly having four cannons of "six and eight caliber, with ammunition on had for each caliber." Currently Fort de Nuestra Seora de la Soledad displays a guardhouse and fort flooring, consisting of an 'esplanada' of cut coral blocks, while the original, surrounding, low barbette (wall) has been 'restored' to what is thought to be the original height and width. On the south of Fort de Nuestra Seora de la Soledad the walls of the arsenal still stand, incorporating the walls of the quarters for the officers and men, and an ammunition storage room. Repairs and 'improvements' have been made Japanese times, with the original theme well preserved. The most recent restoration imported stone workers from Mexico who were familiar with the tools and type of stone used in the original construction. The outer walls were rebuilt and painted white. Four 'replica' cannons were also installed on the esplanada. Today's Fort de Nuestra Seora de la Soledad is a favorite tourist stop and arguably the best, non-commercial, place to watch a sunset on Guam.
